YIN & YANG Concerto for Sheng & Orchestra
YIN & YANG..... is about a philosophic concept of the Daoism that is more than 2000 years old: there is no real duality; the alleged antitheses are subject to constant change and the dark arises from the light, the positive arises from the negative. The principle of polarity contains the polar contrast, but the pairs are inseparably connected and are always related to one another. "I Ging" or "Yi Jin" ( the "book of changes") states that the negative cannot grow infinitely, but will turn into the positive. Conversely, the wise man also learned, that happiness is not permanent, but must turn back into the dark. The wise man can thus always foresee the change and take precautions. -
SYMPHONY NR. 3 CHINESE SEASONS for alto, sheng and orchestra
The 3rd SINFONY "CHINESE SEASONS" for alto, sheng and orchestra is a lyrical symphony in which a bridge is built between German and Chinese culture: the connecting elements are the magnificent transcriptions of Chinese poetry by Hans Bethge (1876-1946), sung by the alto, as well as the sound worlds of the "Sheng", the millennia-old Chinese mouth organ, whose wealth of colours, from quietly vibrating monophony to explosively expansive polyphony, is fascinatingly exploited by the soloist WuWei. - A CD recording with Vesselina Kasarova (mezzo-soprano), WuWei (Sheng) and the Tonkünstlerorchester Österreich conducted by Xincao LI. -
CHANGES Concerto for sheng and orchestra
A concert which is very often performed...mostly by Soloist WuWei. Orchestra published by Schott Music (on hire) and a piano score ED 22098 with Solopart as sheeth music to buy. In the 5000-year-old Chinese "Book of Changes” (in the pinyin transcription called "I Ching" or more recently "Yi Jing"), the world is recognised in permanent change and transformation. The black and white polarity of Yin & Yang is also a symbol of this: only in the opposition of the forces does existence stabilise - light and shadow, the positive and the negative, male-female. The three movements of the Concerto for Sheng and Orchestra correspond to some of the famous trigrams as basic energetic patterns. CHANGES deals with the spiritual transposition of the dual growth processes: everything remains connected in its opposites; behind the proliferating diversity, which seems to be joined together uncontrollably as if by chance, the lawfulness of a permanent change of forces shimmers through. -

SILK ROAD - The Travels of Marco Polo Fantasy for Sheng & Chinese Orchestra
SILK ROAD - THE TRAVELS OF MARCO POLO is a Fantasy for Sheng (the chinese mouth organ) and for Chinese Orchestra, commissioned 2018 by the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. In six movements of we can listen to several musical styles along the Silk Road: starting with the famous city of Samarkand we find a arabic and persian style. After touching the dangerous Pamir Mountains and the endless desert of Taklamakan we meet the mongolian Kublai Khan, who conquered the chinese empire, and founded the mongolian Yuan Dynasty. Finally we reach the beautiful city of Hangzhou....typical for the old style of Han culture. -

Artists: Vesselina Kasarova (Alto) and Wu Wei (Sheng). Performed by the 'TONKÜNSTLER-ORCHESTER' Austria, conducted by Xincao Li (Beijing). -
SILENT SPEECH - A Chinese Reflection mit Wu Wei 1997
The work SILENT SPEECH, which was released in 1997 on the CD "Sound of Siemens" under "A MELODY GOES ROUND THE GLOBE", has a great significance for me. In the context of my large produced music for the 150th birthday of SIEMENS AG. it was only a small thing. In retrospect, however, I appreciate it very much, because it was my first meeting with the exceptional Chinese musician Wu Wei, who moved to Berlin in 1997 and with whom I have had a friendship and collaboration lasting 23 years (as of 2020). Since then we have created and premiered six sheng concerts, from Munich, Europe, to Kransoyarsk/Siberia, and of course Beijing, Shanghai, Xiamen, Hong Kong, Taipei. In 1997 Andreas Weidinger, my co-author, was also significantly involved in the composition SILENT SPEECH. He established the contact to Wu Wei and was also responsible for the recording in the Traumton-Studios in Berlin. The main theme of the film music is "Fantasy for a New Age", which Wu Wei took up in part improvising. By the way, not only on the sheng, but also on other Chinese instruments like Lu Sheng, Ba Wu and Erhu). -
MARCO POLO–SUITE for Erhu, Viola & Orchestra
The content of the suite refers to the historical journey of Marco Polo (1254-1324), who travelled along the famous Silk Road from Venice in Italy via the Central Asian and Mongolian north and discovered the magic of China for himself. The work uses some motifs from my opera "Marco Polo" (Guangzhou 2018), which are freely formed as a new piece of music. -
THE SECRET OF DEMONS & SPIRITS for Sheng and Chinese Orchestra
Although Asia has long since become an industrial society with business world, the best universities and an impressive intellectual upper class, the hidden world of demons and spirits still plays a major role. This is also due to the high value placed on family, ancestors and the deceased. Gods, spirits and demons still cause illness and strokes of fate in everyday belief - despite all scientific enlightenment. These are sent by the ancestors as punishment for wrongdoing. Chinese mythology knows a wealth of monsters and evil forces that threaten man and order. The world of these myths is so rich and diverse that it can only be hinted at here in fragments. The composition "THE SECRET OF SPIRITS & DEMONS" attempts to highlight some of the constellations. In the solo sheng, the more personal emotions and fears can be found; the orchestra represents the mysterious of the demon world. During the Europe Tournee 2024 of the TCO with chief conductor Yu-An CHANG the composition will be performed in Praq and Dresden. -
CD SOUND OF SIEMENS - FANTASY FOR A NEW AGE Soundscape of the 150th Anniversary
Composing the official Soundscape for Siemens' 150th birthday in 1997 was a great project that culminated in three events. 1) There was the exciting feature film "Fantasy for a New Age"with an earwormlike Main theme. 2) There was an international festive banquet soiree in the Berlin ICC with thousands of guests and - polystilistically - six music ensembles from Australia, Africa, China, North America, South America and Greece, 3) and there was a multimedia final concert "Global Symphony" (composed together with Martin Ernst/Cologne) in the ICC for 5000 guests, in which musicians from all continents of Japan, Sidney, New York, Cape Town played simultaneously - at the same touching moment - via satellite with the Symphonie-Orchester der Deutschen Oper Berlin (conducted by Johannes Wildner). It was a demonstration of Siemens telecommunications technology in the sense of "We are a global family" with exciting and touching results. -
SILK ROAD - MARCO POLO GOES EAST Concerto for Sheng & Symphony Orchestra
Ever since working on the opera MARCO POLO, composed in Chinese and premiered in Guangzhou and Beijing in 2018, I have been fascinated by the enigmatic figure of the Venetian Marco Polo (1254-1324). The concert traces the itinerary of the Silkroad's most famous traveller: From the Arab splendour city of Samarkand in a more Persian-Turkish style, it goes through the dangerous Pamir Mountains, the Taklamakan desert to the Mongol ruler Kublai Khan. Finally we are in Hangzhou, the Venice of China... typical of the culture of the traditional Han Chinese. Fiction and truth lie close together in Marco Polo's travelogue. Questions remain unanswered, but much has been proven. What remains an indisputable fact is a sensational reception history: the travelogue was given the nickname "Il Millione" in Italy because it was the most copied and read book of the Middle Ages after the Bible. To this day, Marco Polo is regarded in China as the personification of the Silk Road, as a cipher for international friendship and cultural exchange. -
DAO OF WATER Double Concerto for Yangqin, Qanun & Chinese Orchestra
Water is an important metaphor in Dao De Jing to explain the deep meaning of Dao. Water is the essence of “proper way-making” because water is the element of the lowest places. The orchestration of this composition is a deep symbol for the ambivalence of the element “water”: the two soloists with their sensitive and subtle soundscape are representing the weakness , and the full orchestra is representing the power of the Dao. Commissioned by HKCO Hongkong Chinese Orchestra with worldpremiere at Hongkong Art Festival 2020. -

Jahrhundert geholt werden:Genau vor 400 Jahre ist William Byrd (1543-1623) verstorben und wird hier mit THE BELLS zum Leben wiedererweckt. BRANDENBURGER REMIXED wurde als Hommage zum 300. Geburtstag des Brandenburgischen Konzerts Nr. 2 komponiert. Das Saxophonkonzert SIDDHARTA wurde zum hundertsten Jahrestag Hermann Hesses vielmillionenfach akklamiertem Roman komponiert, in dem Hesse einen Buddha beschrieb, der uns um etwa 2500 Jahre in die Vergangenheit rückführt. SILK ROAD schließlich bezieht sich auf Marco Polo, der vor genau 700 Jahren im Januar 1324 in seinem Geburtsort Venedig gestorben ist. Holen wir uns also mit TIME TRAVELS – ZEITREISEN all diese Orte und Zeiten zurück, um sie ganz frisch noch einmal zu erleben. -
MOZART & BEETHOVEN MEETING YIN & YANG WERGO-CD
The music on this CD seeks to build bridges: to the great composers Mozart and Beethoven of our own tradition as well as to the music of Asia. This recording is also a portrait of the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra, an outstanding ensemble with a youthful joy in experimentation... with its Principal Conductor Simon Gaudenz. And there are two internationally renowned soloists. Juliana Koch is an ARD prizewinner and solo oboist of the London Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Sir Simon Rattle. Wu Wei is the world’s leading exponent of the Sheng, a traditional Chinese instrument. I am fascinated by his artistry and have composed five concertos for him. -
MARCO POLO Opera

MARCO POLO is a 3 hours-opera commissioned by the chinese government for the opera house in Guangzhou.... one of the most beautiful houses worldwide, built by architect Zaha Hadid. The opera with more than thousand handwritten pages of score was originally composed in chinese language, only in a few months in 2017. Then starting in march 2018 two months of rehearsals with stage director Kasper Holten and conductor Muhai Tang and a wonderful team... great time with high professionell friends. And amazing performances in Guangzhou since 4th of may and - starting with 15th of may - in Beijing. In 2019 there were performances of the original staging Quanzhou/ China, followed by a European tour in Milano and Genova / Italy. In May 2024 the opera was performed again in Opera House Guangzhou for the 700th death anniversary of Marco Polo, who died 1324 in Venice/Italy. -

During my intense work with Chinese language, culture and history while composing the MARCO POLO opera, some very personal insights also happened. For example, the Chinese proverb: "If the roots are deep, the wind is not to be feared". In fact, even impossible things can be accomplished if everything is deeply rooted in one's own will and nature. -

On January 15th Naxos officially released the WERGO-CD "CLAIR-OBSCUR. THE COLORS OF SAXOPHONES" with the Saxopohone Quartet CLAIR OBSCUR and with best reviews. And immediately it continues with new CD recordings: The CD BERNARDUS recorded in Gdansk/Poland, WERGO-CD „MOZART & BEETHOVEN MEETING YIN & YANG“ in March with Jena Philharmonics and in April in Siberia Part I of "KRASNOYARSK COUNTERPOINTS" -
...via music connected with friends all over the world
MAKING MUSIC IN THE 7x24 MODE... with all the consequences: composing, being in charge of editions (horrible job of "proofreading"), world premieres, repeated performances, travels and living at the airport ( Berlin, Paris, Madrid, Stockholm, Gdansk, Cologne, Taipei, Beijing), rehearsals and conducting, CD productions... luckily all of the above is combined with friendship and wonderfully inspiring encounters... being a musician could be a dream job, if there weren't the increasing exploitation of the data giants and the "all-for-free" mentality of the music users. Therefore, I'm putting so much time into cultural policy (Berlin-Brussels-current amendment of the legal systems) as President of the German Composers Association, in order to fight for a touch of a livable future for my colleagues... -
2015 IS FINALIZED..... COMPOSING, RECORDINGS & CONCERTS NONSTOP
The final months of 2015 were also fully characterized by 'music', world premieres, new CD releases und endless pages of score compositions: the squirrel I see at my garden window each morning goes nuts for nuts, I go nuts for new compositions! -

Not only "world premieres" are important for composers life, - but also the repeating of performances to bring the compositions into the common repertoire. And not to forget: working as Jury member in competitions is a very responsible work, leading young artists to their future! -
European premiere: OPER "MARCO POLO" in Milan and Genova
From September 22 to October 1, the European premiere of my opera "MARCO POLO", composed in Chinese and commissioned by the Chinese government, took place in Milano and Genova (Italy). After the three productions in China this European tour was now a successful test. -
ASIA - Seeking the origins of culture
Asia, a longing for the origins of cultures that has been increasingly buried in Western civilization, has been fascinating for over 20 years. Encounter with old traditional instruments, with a concept of "Modernism" that is not as Eurocentric as our "contemporary music" stamped by Darmstadt, Donaueschingen or Adorno. -
FALL OF 2014 - HARVEST TIME
Despite my many obligations as president of the German Composer Association, head of the supervisory board of the GEMA, as well as president of the German Music Council, creative work remains the center of my life. Whenever I compose, I receive spiritual guidance from my stone demon that I picked up at the monastery in Maulbronn in October! Quite the philosopher, that little devil! -
April, May, June....musical diversity
Is it actually possible to beat the turbulent combination of composing for concert halls / movies, producing CDs (6 new CDs in 2015 alone), writing essays, traveling, and working in cultural-political jobs at the German Composer Association (DKV), at the GEMA, at ProKlassik, and at the German Music Council? Yes ... it can be beat ... things are getting wilder ... even though I have just turned 65! -
FLOWERS OF SPRING: COMPOSER'S LIFE
After having finished the composition of an expressive soundtrack in January, I am continuously composing for the concert halls: premieres of new works have been performed in Hamburg , Manaus / Brazil , Paris , Jena , Munich , Augsburg , Berlin , Gdansk and Beijing . A CD comprising my cello works with Laszlo Fenyo and the Deutsches Symphonie- Orchester Berlin (German Symphony Orchestra Berlin) as WERGO No . 7 was produced in March and new music prints were permanently published. The trip as "composer in residence" to the Teatro Amazonas in Brazil with 40° Celsius and 90% humidity was unforgettable... and the nature was impressive. -

A lot of of concerts and world-premieres in first half of the year 2022 - after Covid19-pandemic the concert life was revitalized! -
THE APPROACH OF SUMMERTIME 2014!
The month of April began with an exciting CD production in the auditorium of Grafenegg castle near Vienna: Xincao Li conducted the 3rd symphony „Chinese Seasons“, as well as the Sheng-Concerto „Changes“ with Vesselina Kasarova and WuWei. Later on in May, three world premieres will follow: Georg Wendt will perform my new organ composition „Monumentum 2014“ in the Berlin Cathedral; on the 25th of May, I will personally conduct my symphonic composition „CITY LIFE – Hommage an das Ruhrgebiet“ in Essen and on the 30th of May, the Regensburg Cathedral will host my multilingual composition „Pater Noster“ for a choir with six voices.
