Introduction: Enjott Schneider:
MUSIC AS A WAY TO THE INNER WORLD
This album is something very special with its sounds between meditation, silence, the world beyond and the utopia of a peaceful world: the sound of the flute, which can produce such infinite variety, especially in the quiet tones, is combined with the organ, which can create a transcendent timbre like no other instrument and yet offers a multi-faceted symphonic colour palette. Both instruments are played by excellent masters of their craft. This allows us to hear a surprisingly varied sequence of ‘skilfully cut’ little diamonds. In our current world of materialism, egoism and nationalism, it is a blessing for the soul to immerse oneself in the freedom of the eternal and timeless immaterial world.
NOTES ON THE COMPOSITIONS:
IN THE HEART is the finale of a chamber music work ‘Baraka - Blessing Power - Blessing Power’ and is inspired by a motto of the poet Khalil Gibbran: ‘Beauty is not in the face - Beauty is a light in the heart’
MAZURKA TRISTE. Krzysztof Penderecki (23 November 1933 - 29 March 2020) is one of the most important composers of New Music - an unattainable great. Although he was a cosmopolitan far beyond Poland and at home everywhere as a citizen of the world, in his heart he remained a Pole full of love for his homeland. That's why I wanted to write a ‘mazurka’ in Penderecki's honour, in which, as is well known, the Polish soul has been reflected so unforgettably since Frédéric Chopin. And since the Polish soul was so hurt and saddened by Penderecki's death... the idea of the ‘Mazurka Triste’ was born.MARIA.
In Eastern Buddhist art or religion, MANDALAS are ornamental, usually circular structures. They are used for meditation and, with their cyclical patterns interspersed with inner order, symbolise the wholeness and healing of people - by analogy, these pieces of music revolve around rhythmic patterns. They are strangely complex (e.g. 5/4 metre or 11/8 metre or a 9/8 metre divided into 4+3+2) and yet very simple.
PRELUDE EN ROSE is a berceuse, a lullaby, but with a mysterious rhythm. Simple, yet very individual. With its contrast of beauty and the pain of thorns, the rose symbolises the Virgin Mary, also Venus, or ‘love’ in general.
AILULU is based on a lullaby by Galician Jews from the 19th century and was originally composed for flute and harp for Agata Kielar-Dlugosz. Beauty and sorrow are closely linked here, as millions of Jews were murdered in the historical landscape of Galicia in eastern Poland and Ukraine during the Holocaust.
DREAMIN BACKWARDS TO MAY FORMER TIMES MISTRESS combines modern sound with medieval music: the melody ‘La Manfredina’ is one of the earliest documents of courtly music, an Estampie or Saltarello. The solo piece dreams its way back from the 21st century to this courtly world of female love, which seems strange, dark and yet fascinatingly archaic.
WORLDS OF TREE. Trees are personified forces of the earth. For thousands of years they have been sung about, worshipped and immortalised in myths and fairy tales.
Each type of tree represents an individual form in the sense of an archetype, which is expressed most clearly in the silhouette of the tree, in the shape of its leaves, in the structure of its bark, in the energy potential of its growth and in the shape of its fruit. These characteristics are very similar to the essential principles of human psychology.
The ‘apple tree’ is sensual, erotic, a tree of knowledge and love. It is the oldest cultivated tree. With its vital substances, it is regarded as a gift of life and eternal youth.
The ‘chestnut’ is justice and honesty. It gives blossom and fruit, is loyal to the family, provides shade, is useful and nourishing.
ADAGIETTO is the quiet finale of the Organ Symphony No. 3 TOTENTANZ. It presents a melody from my soundtrack to the great film ‘Stalingrad’ and tells of grief and suffering.
NEKYIA describes the archetype of the journey to the underworld: whoever wants to live must - like Orpheus on his way to Eurydice - descend to death. A myth, the archetype of all religions (including the shamans' experience of death as a path of initiation) that also epitomises Christianity: the path to eternal life goes via death on the cross. Consequently, the meditative final movement, in which the flute is led according to Indian raga, is called: LUX AETERNA. Grief, death - and then the path to eternal bliss.
