Fun with Trash
by Jörg Loskill
.... wrote three compositions for the sextet that as unique as they are cheeky, as strange as they are laconic. In the 'Morgenstern-Liederbuch' (for voices and orchestra), Schneider sets seven hilarious, grotesque, absurd poems of the lyric poet Christian Morgenstern (who also became an anthroposophical mystic) – a memento of a writer, who claimed dadaistic tendencies but was also able to describe the banalities of everyday life in aphoristic briefness with severity and wisdom. The Bavarian musician (Schneider) possesses completely uncomplicated access to the unique world of the poet, a poet who seemed to be able to find his own interpretation for all possible trivialities. That is because he (Schneider) listens to the punch lines of words and expressions and uses that information to create musical sparks and to find / create a language of its own. There are some hints of the sound of the songs of the Harmonists and the Carmina culture. Nevertheless, Schneider takes this song book to the present time.
In the 'Variationen über die Liebe' (variants about love), he focuses on classic rhythms and dances (such as the Italian cantilena, the Vienna scherzo, or the South American tango).
In the youngest opus „Chatroom“, Schneider utilises the briefness and anonymity of the cyber world and creates an ironic caricature of the strangeness of the initial conversations between men and women via text message, email or in chatrooms. This caricature is never cynical. A musical translation of online abbreviation orgies - it is entrancing how the 'Singphoniker' manage this seemingly difficult task so brilliantly.
Three episodes of contemporary vocal music that is virtually unheard-of - demanding a great deal in terms of vocals, technique, voice balance. The 'Singphoniker' turn the 'trash songs' into a blissful joy because Schneider salvages all of the trash of classical and pop music he can get his hands on...

...a cheeky and also critical CD (which is already the case because of the 'MORGENSTERN-LIEDERBUCH'): Especially the last sentence (taken from an actual online chat conversation) of the composition 'CHATROOM' hits the nail on the head: 'DAS LEBEN IST SCHEISSE, ABER DIE GRAFIK IST GEIL!' (Life is shit but the graphics are awesome) - there is no better way to express the current state of our society where design, graphics, and the exterior seem to be all that matters ... the interior, the spiritual, and the contents no longer seem to be of importance.
