This collection, spanning a forty-year creative period – comprising partly new recordings and partly material from the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation’s archive – is characterised by an expression of the obscure, the strange and the bizarre, and the unexpected. Thus, the unfamiliar timbre of the hammered dulcimer catches the listener’s attention just as much as the unusual interpretation of J.S. Bach’s music through surreal dreamscapes; Joan Miró’s symbolic visual language is translated into sound, nocturnal criminal fantasies inspire the creativity of a trombonist, whilst the Dadaist and unconventional anti-logic of Charles Chaplin and Karl Valentin drive three compositions for brass ensembles.
This CD brings together – in a highly elaborate production – a kaleidoscope of 20 creative artists who perform at the very highest level and guarantee one thing: it certainly never gets boring! Stylistically ranging from slapstick tones to transcendent sounds and the avant-garde… whilst remaining true to the vibrant richness of Johann Sebastian Bach.
