Krzysztof Penderecki (23 November 1933 - 29 March 2020) has just passed away, - one of the most important composers of New Music, - an unattainably great one. Although he was a cosmopolitan far beyond Poland's borders and at home everywhere as a citizen of the world, in his heart he remained a Pole full of love for his homeland. That is why I wanted to write a "Mazurka" in Penderecki's honour, in which, as is well known, since Frédéric Chopin the Polish soul has been able to reflect itself so unforgettably. And since the Polish soul was so hurt and saddened by Penderecki's death... the idea of the "Mazurka Triste" was born.

Introduction: The MAZURKA TRISTE was composed in the time of the Covid19 pandemic, when musical and public life was only digital via internet. Rules of the game: I was supposed to write a work "In Memoriam Penderecki" on Monday, April 6th, 2020, - with two work beginnings. These were put on the internet with a score and sound demo so that the audience could make a choice. I wrote a work beginning "Furioso" and alternatively a work beginning "Mazurka Triste" . On Monday evening I received the vote for "Mazurka Triste" ... so that I could spend composing the next minute overnight in two variants A1 and A2 (to choose). Composing and producing. On Tuesday the internet community decided for A1 and I composed B1 and B2 again overnight...and so on. With E1 and E2 all 12 parts were composed, - and the "Mazurka Triste" was finished. - It was a stressful but very interesting and exciting experience, - for the first time in music history a work with continuous audience participation was created.
