HERBSTMILCH. IN MEMORIAM ANNA WIMSCHNEIDER, quintet for flute, harp, violin, viola, violoncello, are musical reflections on the autobiography ‘Herbstmilch’
by the Lower Bavarian farmer Anna Wimschneider (1919-1993). Based on themes from the cinema film HERBSTMILCH by Joseph Vilsmaier, this homage to a woman as great as she was modest was created in 2025, also processing personal impressions.

Introduction: ‘Herbstmilch - Lebenserinnerungen einer Bäuerin’ is an autobiography by Anna Wimschneider (1919-1993), which became one of the biggest successes in the history of the German book trade, spending more than three years in the bestseller lists.
The quintet is based on themes from my film music for Joseph Vilsmaier's 1988 film adaptation, which also became a huge media hit. As a composer and co-author of an audio book, I had the opportunity to meet Anna and Albert Wimschneider several times on their farm in Schwarzenstein near Pfarrkirchen (Lower Bavaria).
This new chamber music version reflects all these impressions and, in addition to the film music, offers new thoughts and moods that relate to everyday life and the hardships of rural life. Also new is the ‘birdsong’ character that shimmers through in several passages, creating a pastoral, friendly mood as a counter-world to the world of worries.
