Introduction: The "GOLDFINGER VARIATIONS" are dedicated to the memory of the brilliant actor Gert Fröbe (1913 - 1988), who so unforgettably played the role of the pathologically malicious and power-addicted title character in the 1964 James Bond film "Goldfinger". The orchestral work is not programme music, but a concertante study of the mutability of both musical material and the human psyche. It is based on a six-tone series
g-f#-c-h-a#-f, whose mutations give the composition a centring and unmistakable colour. - As composer in residence at the Berlin Chamber Philharmonic "METAMORPHOSEN" was composed for this work for a concert programme "Magic of Crime", which will be presented at the Berlin Philharmonic on 27 May 2022 and at the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie on 12 June 2022.
The "structures of evil" - more topical than ever in these times of war and aggression - are among the mysteries of human civilisation. Their fascination, sublimated to aesthetic appeal, pervades the works of art of the last two centuries and is closely related to the psychoanalytical exploration of the darkest sides of the soul and to the pleasurably experienced isolation of the hyper-individualised ego and thus a separation from society. The dark worlds can already be found in the mysticism of medieval alchemy, in which the Faust material was already at home. Witch burnings, covens, Luciferian fantasies of the churches and torture have long been familiar building blocks. The opera "Salome" after Oscar Wilde became an artistic milestone. At the premiere, one was admired in the press wrote "German opera has not seen anything more satanic and artistic. Sadism, the de-tabooing of the obscene and interest in vampirism, magnetism became increasingly socially acceptable in the arts, - right up to the "permanent thriller" as the essence of television entertainment. Mysterious?! - it seems to be the repressed reverse of the "dear God" and an idealised do-gooder. In other religions with a neutral image of God, such as Buddhism, the magic of the non-divine and Satan seems to be far less pronounced.
