Movements: Ein dicker Sack voll Weizen stand
Auf einem Speicher an der Wand. –
Da kam das schlaue Volk der Mäuse
Und pfiff ihn an in dieser Weise:
„Oh, du da in der Ecke,
Großmächtigster der Säcke!
Du bist ja der Gescheitste,
der dickste und der Breitste!
Respekt und Reverenz
Vor Eurer Exzellenz!“
Text (in German language only):
Mit innigem Behagen hört
Der Sack, dass man ihn so verehrt.
Ein Mäuslein hat ihm unterdessen
Ganz unbemerkt ein Loch gefressen.
Es rinnt das Korn in leisem Lauf.
Die Mäuse knuspern’s emsig auf.
Schon wird er faltig, krumm und matt.
Die Mäuse werden fett und glatt.
Zuletzt, man kennt ihn kaum noch mehr,
ist er kaputt und hohl und leer.

Erst ziehn sie ihn von seinem Thron;
Ein jedes Mäuschen spricht ihm hohn,
und jedes, wie es geht, so spricht’s:
„Empfehle mich, Herr Habenichts!“

Duration: 3 minutes

Instrumentation: Instrumentation: choir with high voices (SSA) and a) piano or b) brass quintet (2 trumpets, horn, trombone, tuba)

Text/Lyrics by: Ballad by Wilhelm Busch (1832-1908)

Introduction: About the interpretation:
The composition can be instrumented with piano, as well as with brass quintet. As a ballad, the tempi can be chosen by the conductor freely and with high contrast ('balladic'). The mood changes between irony and relaxed joyfulness.

Dedication: I sincerely dedicate this ballad to various politicians,
officials, presidents... and a good many others!
