UBI CARITAS
for mixed choir with six voices

UBI CARITAS ("Where love lives, God is present!“) is the central statement of Christian faith to me, one can be firmly convinced of. The text of this antiphon from the Liturgy of the Holy Thursday was anonymously transmitted as a manuscript from the monastery St. Gallen from the 8th century. For the present composition two of the 12 traditional verses were used.

Text:
Ubi caritas et amor. Deus ibi est.

Congregavit nos in unum Christi amor
Exultemus et in ipso jucundemur.
Timeamus, et amemus Deum vivum.
Et ex corde diligamus nos sincero.

Ubi caritas et amor. Deus ibi est.

Simul quoque cum beatis videamus.
Glorianter vultum tuum, Christe Deus:
Gaudium, quod est immensum, atque probum.
Saecula per infinita saeculorum. Amen

A literal translation:

Where charity and love is. There is God.
Christ's love has gathered us into one.
Let us shout, and let us delight in himself.
We want to fear and we want to love the living God,
and love each other from sincere hearts.

Where charity and love is. There is God
And at the same time we want to see together with the Blessed
the glory of your face, Christ God:
With joy, which is immense and honest
throughout the eternal centuries of the centuries.
Amen.
