The RHINE, - a myth. The "Rhine Romanticism" is considered a symbol of the German essence and has fascinated crowds of poets, visual artists and visitors from all over the world. In four movements, moods of this legendary and (since Roman times) historical river are thematised, with a leitmotif "Rhine" theme "Rhenus Pater" providing the musical framework. - On a personal note: As a person born and raised in Weil am Rhein, the "Rhine" is a companion, a symbol of home and life to me, and I have always wanted to set a musical monument to it. With its length of 1238 kilometres from the Swiss Alps to its mouth in the North Sea near Holland, it has a catchment area spanning nine states and is the river of Central Europe.

1:
Prologue - choir: Germania omnis a Gallis Raetisque et Pannonis Rheno et Danubio fluminibus separatur. (Germania as a whole is separated from Gaul, Rhaetia and Pannonia by the rivers Rhine and Danube)
Rhenus Raeticarum Alpium inaccesso ac praecipiti vertice ortus modico flexu in occidentem versus septentrionali Oceano miscetur. (The Rhine flows from the rugged, inaccessible crest of the Rhaetian Alps, makes a bend to the west and flows into the northern ocean).
After the waterfall - choir: Holy Women at the Rhine hear the future in the sound of the water and see prophetic signs in the eddies of the river! (original Greek by Plutarch, "Caesar", chapter 19, theorem 8).
Evocatio - choir: RHENUS PATER – RHENUS PATER, Nympharum pater amniumque, Rhene (Father Rhine - Father Rhine. Father of the river gods and nymphs; Epigrammaton liber X, Nr. VII des Marcus Valerius Martialis 40-103).
Greetings to you, old father Rhine,
Tell me, how have things been going?
I have often thought of you,
With deep yearning and longing.
(Heinrich Heine 1797-1856)

2:
Castles - solo soprano and choir:

(Rosa Maria Assing, 1783-1840)

A Toast to Wine – choir: Drink - live - beauty - forever!
(A Greek toast to a Roman drinking glass ca. 330-340 A.D., found during archaeological excavations in Cologne-Braunsfeld in 1960).

Drunk! We all ought to be drunk!
Youth is drunkenness without wine;
If old age can drink itself back to youth
that is a wonderful virtue.

Cares are part of our lovely life
but an antidote to care is available in grapes.
(Johann Wolfgang von Goethe 1749-1832)

Monasteries – solo soprano and choir: „The eyes are the windows of the soul“ as well as the antiphon: Caritas abundat in omnia,
de imis excellentissima
super sidera,
atque amantissima in omnia,
quia summo Regi
osculum pacis dedit.
(Loving tenderness abounds for all, from the darkest to the most eminent one beyond the stars, Exquisitely loving all, she bequeaths the kiss of peace upon the ultimate King; Hildegard von Bingen 1098-1179)

3:
Loreley – solo soprano and choir:

Was treffen für seltsame Klänge / so zaubrisch befangend mein Ohr?“

Dann Liebchen, dann bringen die Nixen / Der Lurley uns keine Gefahr.
(Rosa Maria Assing, 1783-1840)

4.
Cologne – choir:
In the Rhine, in whose beauteous swirl,
In whose waves it lies reflected
With its towering cathedral,
Is Cologne, the great, the sacred.

In the Cathedral an Icon stands,
Rendered upon gilded leather;
Into my life’s wild wastelands
Its friendly light would glimmer.

Blossoms and cherubs do hover there
Above our belovéd Dame;
The eyes, the lips, and the cheeks so fair
Of my belovéd are just the same.
(Heinrich Heine 1797-1856)

5:
Choir: "Mein Herz ist am Rhein" (1841)
On the Rhine is my heart, where affection holds sway !
On the Rhine is my heart, where encradled I lay,
Where around me friends bloom, where 1 dreamt away youth,
Where the heart of my love glows with rapture and truth,
where I have revelled in song and in wine :
Wherever I go is my heart on the Rhine!

All hail, thou broad torrent, so golden and green,
Ye castles and churches, ye hamlets serene,
Ye cornfields that wave in the breeze as it sweeps,
Ye forests and ravines, ye towering steeps,
Ye mountains e'er clad in the sun-illumed vine !
Wherever I go is my heart on the Rhine !
(Wolfgang Müller von Königswinter, 1816-1873)

With contrapunctal fragments by the solo soprano:
Wo aber ist einer,
 Um frei zu bleiben
Sein Leben lang, und des Herzens Wunsch
Allein zu erfüllen, so
Aus günstigen Höhn, wie der Rhein,
Und so aus heiligem Schoße
Glücklich geboren, wie jener?
Drum ist ein Jauchzen sein Wort.
Nicht liebt er, wie andere Kinder,
In Wickelbanden zu weinen;
Evocatio - Chor: RHENUS PATER – RHENUS PATER, Nympharum pater amniumque, Rhene (Father Rhine - Father Rhine. Father of the river gods and nymphs; Epigrammaton liber X, Nr. VII des Marcus Valerius Martialis 40-103).
Greetings to you, old father Rhine,
Tell me, how have things been going?
I have often thought of you,
With deep yearning and longing.
(Heinrich Heine 1797-1856)
