DIANA - CRY FOR LOVE (composed 2000-2002; premiere 2002). Song opera with soloists, chorus, ballet, rock band, large orchestra. Wolfgang Roegner traced in his libretto the last days of the British Princess Diana, who was killed in August 1987 with her lover Dodi al Fayed. The content is about the ‘myth of Diana’ as a woman caught between love and desire for recognition and escape from (by her own sworn) media coverage. A music theatre work in succession of the great musicals such as ‘My Fair Lady’, ‘Evita’ or ‘West Side Story’, which found a separate language in its own style between Kurt Weill, ‘Rapcitative’ and the two Latin finales (according to apocalyptic texts by John).

NULLVIER – KEINER KOMMT AN GOTT VORBEI (ZERO FOUR. NO ONE PASSES GOD) is a soccer opera, premiered by the Music Theater im Revier, Gelsenkirchen for the 100th anniversary of the football club Schalke 04 and repeated in more than 30 sold-out performances. In 3 hours, soloists, chorus, dancers, big band, rock band and orchestra succeeded to produce such intense emotions that the audience, even before the break, literally stood on the chairs. A joint work by librettists Michael Klaus and Bernd Matzkowski (director: Matthias Davids, choreography: Melissa King, musical direction: Kai Tietje). The German press – from ‘Spiegel’ to ‘FAZ’ – skipped with excitement:

‚The premiere of Enjott Schneider’s ‚Nullvier – Keiner kommt an Gott vorbei‘ … Composer Enjott Schneider, known for film music and literature operas, effectively mixes different styles from classic American musicals in the elegant style of Cole Porter with Turkish pop, earthy rock and chants of fan crowds... and no one was left sitting at the premiere, not even national coach Rudi Voeller. (Frankfurter Rundschau, 11.5.2004)

.. The music was written by Enjott Schneider, a motley, but uncommonly brisk style mixture of big band, groove, choral fugue and pop song, almost everyone gets a fine little solo of Schalke's new brother.... Ride out, if you are Schalkers! (Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung 11.5.2004)

Music theater has not yet experienced this: Premiere guests throw Schalke-scarves over their tails, battle cries (as in the arena) roar through the house, 1000 premiere guests get up, all ready for the final break, and cheer towards the stage… Enjott Schneider is best known as a film composer, and writes operas, symphonies and chamber music. ‘Nullvier’ is his first musical and it is done not bad at all! The songs are not nearly as shallow as it could well have happened with such a challenge. Schneider's work does not chum up, but always surprises with a catch. From the orchestra pit ... it grooves, rocks, sparks and swings, even Turkish Pop is cited. The film parts keep the score in constant flux, there is not too much time for applause. Sometimes Sondheim and Yeston seem to greet from afar, but generally, the music has great autonomy, which is reinforced by Schneider’s special manuscript that holds together all the seemingly disparate elements ... ‘We are the fans of FC Schalke’ is a true hit, absolutely suitable for the stadium. (Musicals Juni 2004)

Nullvier – no one passes God. … a Show full of punch lines, created around the emerging soccer talent Jojo, who needs to save Schalke 04 from relegation. For the music, well-known TV and opera composer Enjott Schneider was commissioned, who combined the American musical sound with jazz and football anthems. (sat1 TV, Music News, 11.5.2004)
